Alabama Car Insurance

From Dauphin Island to Lookout Mountain, Alabama drivers have different roads, different risks, and different budgets. As an independent agency, we compare rates from multiple carriers to find the best fit for your driving profile — including drivers other agencies turn away.

Alabama State Minimums

What Alabama Law Requires You to Carry

Alabama requires all registered vehicles to carry liability insurance at the following minimum limits:

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000 per accident

Liability insurance covers damages you cause to other people and their property in an accident you're at fault for. It does not cover your own vehicle or your own injuries.

What the minimums don't cover:

The minimum is the legal floor — not a coverage recommendation. A serious accident can exceed these limits quickly, leaving you personally liable for the difference. Medical bills from a multi-person accident, a newer vehicle, or a lawsuit can all exceed the state minimum in a single claim.

Most drivers in Alabama carry higher liability limits, and many add:

  • Collision coverage

Pays for damage to your vehicle from an accident, regardless of fault

  • Comprehensive coverage

Pays for non-collision damage: theft, fire, hail, flooding, animal strikes

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Covers your injuries and vehicle damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient coverage

Alabama has one of the higher rates of uninsured drivers in the country. UM/UIM coverage is one of the most important add-ons an Alabama driver can carry.

How Rates Work

Why Two Alabama Drivers Pay Very Different Rates

Car insurance in Alabama is priced based on a combination of factors — some you can control, some you can't. Understanding what drives your rate helps you know where there's room to save and where there isn't.

Factors that affect your Alabama car insurance rate:

  • Driving record

At-fault accidents and moving violations raise your rate. The impact fades over time, typically after 3–5 years.

  • Age

Teen drivers and young adults pay significantly higher rates. Rates typically level off in the mid-20s and improve steadily through the 50s.

  • Vehicle

Make, model, year, safety ratings, and repair costs all influence your premium. A car that costs more to repair costs more to insure.

  • Zip code

Rural areas of Alabama generally have lower rates than urban and suburban areas. Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile tend to be more expensive zip codes than East Alabama or the Wiregrass.

  • Coverage level

More coverage costs more. But many drivers are significantly underinsured for the risk they carry.

  • Credit history

Alabama permits carriers to use credit-based insurance scores as a rating factor. Improving your credit can lower your rate.

  • Prior coverage

A lapse in coverage — even a short one — can raise your rate with many carriers. Maintaining continuous coverage keeps your rate lower.

The most important thing to know: not every carrier prices these factors the same way. A driving record that makes you expensive at one carrier may be priced more favorably at another. That's exactly why comparing before you buy matters.

Tickets, Accidents, SR-22 — We Have Carriers for That.

Not every driver has a clean record. And not every agency can help when the record isn't clean.

We work with carriers that specialize in non-standard auto coverage — Alabama drivers who have been turned down elsewhere, who have prior accidents or violations, or who need an SR-22 filing. If you've been quoted an unexpectedly high rate or told your policy is being cancelled, we may be able to find a better option.

We write Alabama car insurance for drivers with:

  • One or more at-fault accidents
  • Moving violations or multiple tickets
  • DUI or DWI on record
  • SR-22 filing requirements
  • Prior lapse in coverage
  • License reinstatement situations

We don't turn people away because one carrier won't write them. Our job is to find the most competitive rate available for your actual situation — not the ideal one.

No judgment. We've seen it before. We'll find what's available.

Why It Matters Who You Shop With

One Carrier's Quote Is Not the Market

When you go directly to a single insurance company for a car insurance quote, you're seeing one company's pricing for your risk profile. That's it. If their rates are high for your zip code, your vehicle, or your driving history — you have nowhere to go but somewhere else on your own.

As an independent agency, we send your information to multiple carriers and compare what comes back. That means:

  • You see competitive options side by side
  • We can explain which carrier is pricing your specific risk favorably and why

The carriers we work with for Alabama auto include Progressive, National General, Geico, Travelers, and others. Because we're not tied to any one of them, our recommendation is based on your rate — not a company relationship.

Supporting Points:

  • We compare multiple carriers before quoting
  • We write standard, preferred, and non-standard auto policies
  • We write Alabama car insurance statewide — not just in the Valley area
Coverage Types

What's Actually in Your Alabama Car Insurance Policy

Car insurance is made up of several distinct coverage types — you can think of them as individual layers of protection that you combine based on your situation.

Liability insurance

Required by Alabama law. Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. Does not cover you or your vehicle.

Collision coverage

Covers damage to your own vehicle from a collision, regardless of who is at fault. Required by most lenders on financed vehicles. If your car is paid off and lower in value, you may choose to skip this — we help you run that math.

Comprehensive coverage

Covers damage to your vehicle from non-collision events: theft, fire, storm damage, flooding, hitting an animal, vandalism. Often required with collision by lenders. Relatively inexpensive to add.

Uninsured/ underinsured motorist (UM/UIM)

Covers your injuries and vehicle damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough to cover the full loss. Alabama's uninsured driver rate makes this a high-value add for most drivers.

Medical payments (MedPay)

Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. Supplements health insurance and covers gaps like deductibles and copays.

Rental reimbursement

Covers the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim.

Common Questions

What Alabama Drivers Ask Us About Car Insurance

  • How much does car insurance cost in Alabama?

It varies significantly based on your driving record, age, vehicle, zip code, and coverage level. A clean-record driver in a rural Alabama zip code paying for liability-only coverage on an older vehicle might pay $60–$90 per month. A young driver in a larger city with full coverage on a newer vehicle could pay $200 or more. The most accurate number comes from a quote — and we can typically get you one in a single conversation. We compare multiple carriers, so you're seeing what the market actually looks like for your profile.

  • What is the minimum car insurance required in Alabama?

Alabama requires 25/50/25 liability coverage — $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. This is the legal minimum to register and drive a vehicle in Alabama. Most drivers carry higher limits than the minimum, since serious accidents can exceed these amounts and leave you personally liable for the difference. We always explain what the minimums cover — and what they don't — before recommending a coverage level.

  • What is SR-22 insurance in Alabama, and how do I get it?

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility — a document your insurance carrier files with the Alabama Department of Revenue certifying that you carry the required minimum liability coverage. It's required for certain violations including DUI, reckless driving, driving without insurance, and license reinstatement after a suspension. An SR-22 is not a separate policy — it's a filing attached to your existing auto policy. We work with carriers that file SR-22s in Alabama. If you need one, we can typically get it taken care of as part of your policy setup.

  • Does Alabama require uninsured motorist coverage?

Alabama does not require UM/UIM coverage, but it is strongly recommended. Alabama consistently ranks among the states with the highest percentages of uninsured drivers. If you're hit by an uninsured driver, your own liability insurance won't cover your injuries or vehicle damage — you'd be filing a claim against your own policy or pursuing the at-fault driver directly. Uninsured motorist coverage is relatively inexpensive to add and protects you from a scenario that is unfortunately common on Alabama roads.

  • Can I get car insurance in Alabama if I've had a DUI or multiple accidents?

Yes, in most cases. Non-standard auto coverage is available for drivers with challenging records — including DUI, multiple at-fault accidents, or prior cancellations. The rate will be higher than standard market pricing, and your options may be more limited, but coverage is usually available. We represent carriers that specialize in non-standard Alabama auto policies. Tell us your situation honestly and we'll identify what's available at the most competitive rate we can find.
